The Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) establishes a safety chain running from design through to the user manual. Its Annex IV lists machinery for which conformity assessment must involve a notified body; whether a machine appears on that list determines the length and cost of the process from the outset. For product groups with heavy second-hand import volumes, such as forklifts and construction machinery, noise emission obligations also come into play.
